What’s the Difference Between Horsepower and Torque, and When Do You Need Them?

The difference between horsepower and torque is one of the most talked-about engine topics — and one of the most misunderstood. They’re related, but they describe different parts of how an engine delivers power, which is why one vehicle can feel quick off the line while another shines at highway speeds.

The simple definitions

Torque is a twisting force. In an engine, it’s the rotational force at the crankshaft trying to turn the wheels. It’s usually measured in pound-feet (lb-ft) or newton-meters (Nm).

Horsepower is how quickly that torque can be applied. It’s a measure of work done over time, originally defined by James Watt to compare steam engines to the output of horses.
