What to Bring When You Go Tailgating
Tailgating at the stadium, park, pitch or pool is a tradition that spans all seasons in America, from the heat of summer to the frost of winter. Whatever the sport or the weather, it pays to be prepared.
In addition to the brats and brews—or whatever tradition your crew maintains—there are some items that can make tailgating easier and more fun.
- A Really Good Cooler. Ditch the cardboard and Styrofoam and make your ice last longer by upgrading your cooler. From a classic Igloo to a premium Yeti, there are models in all sizes and price ranges. If space is at a premium, try a cooler bag.
- A Grill, BBQ or Smoker. If you are going to serve more than sandwiches, you will have to be able to cook. From portable grills to monster towable smokers, there are many models in all price ranges to get your group grilling. Just know that bigger is not always better. Towable units can be difficult to park and are not allowed in all facilities.
- A Tent or Canopy. In the summer, overhead cover can help you beat the heat. In the winter, it can keep you out of the snow. Folding units, which often come with their own bag, can make a major difference without taking up much car space. Just make sure you have ties to keep it secure if the wind blows up.
- The Right Tools. Depending on what you plan to do, this might include heaters, sprayers, Bluetooth speakers, chargers, a battery-powered blender, a bottle opener, multi-tool, flashlight, meat thermometer, basting brush and/or folding chairs and tables. If it makes your party easier, bring it along. Just make sure it makes it back into the car when the day is done.
- Cleaning Materials. Garbage bags, wipes, paper towels and some household cleaner can make cleanup easier when meals are done. Keeping your cleaning materials in a sealable tote makes them easy to grab and toss in the car. The same goes for disposable plates, cups and plastic cutlery.
Of course, all serious tailgating starts with clean, well-maintained car and larger is often better. If you are looking for a bigger car to expand your tailgating operation, begin by getting pre-qualified for auto financing with Credit Acceptance. In just a few minutes, and with no commitment, you can learn how much you may be able to borrow and be well on your way to a new tailgating vehicle.
